La Luna Sangre (lit. The Blood Moon) is a 2017 Philippine horror-fantasy drama television series. Directed by Richard Arellano, Rory Quintos and Mae Cruz-Alviar, it stars Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla, Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin. It is the third installment of Lobo and the sequel to Imortal. The series premiered on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida evening block and worldwide on The Filipino Channel on June 19, 2017, replacing My Dear Heart.

Plot

The prophecy of the Blood Moon is the heart of this fictional series. It predicts that the child of a powerful vampire and the chosen wolf ends the evil reign of the vampire with the cursed ink. Following the Great War in the Imortal series, this story picks up after Mateo (John Lloyd Cruz) and Lia (Angel Locsin) Rodriguez are living their lives as powerless mortals in San Isidro, a fictional province in the Philippines. Sandrino (Richard Gutierrez), Magnus’ son, also known as Supremo, orders his forces to hunt the Rodriguez family to prevent the prophecy's fulfillment and ensure his ascendancy into power.[2] Malia’s bloodline is a threat to Supremo even as a mortal child without powers.[3][4]Supremo kills Mateo and Lia, unaware that their 7 year old Malia is carried off to safety at a secret LLU base in Tanay, Rizal[5]by the werewolf Baristo (Joross Gamboa).

Malia is 21 years old when Supremo finally locates the LLU's camp and massacres everyone. Supremo and his vampires replace LLU’s position and influence as business and political leaders and assimilate into mainstream society in the metropolis. In the 14 years since the massacre, the peaceful cooperation established by the LLU organization is gone, werewolves are hiding, and humans are in peril. Scattered after the battle, many LLU leaders flee the country. A few defeated remnants find each other in Manila. There, Malia meets Tristan (Daniel Padilla), a young man seeking to avenge his father's death by vampires. Tristan joins a secret youth vigilante group called Moonchasers, who track and kill vampires and protect Supremo’s targeted victims.

Jethro Kabigting (Dino Imperial), the seer, predicts Malia’s and Tristan’s fates are linked. The charge of energy they feel when they link hands signifies a conflicted relationship. The young couple grow closer, nonetheless, and Tristan uncovers secrets about his friend: her alliance with werewolves and vampires; she is not mortal and is the “Chosen One”. They fall in love.

In this battle of good against evil, Sandrino personifies evil, but he was not born evil. Suffering a loveless childhood, he is raised by an evil vampire, who confers on him the enchantment of the cursed ink when he was barely out of his teens. He grows into adulthood consumed with anger, but he weakens when he comes face to face with his brother. His desire to bond with him and experience a real family gets his heart beating again. At the enchanted forest scene, Jacintha chooses not to kill the young Sandrino, pointing to the cursed ink as the real evil, a foreshadowing of her mission to end the cursed ink from Sandrino.

Defeating the Supremo is Malia’s entire life’s work. Expected by everyone to fulfill the prophecy when she matures, she faces defeat and disappointments time and again when her powers do not manifest. Undaunted, she persists in her mission, is killed and resurrects, and courageously moves forward to fulfill the prophecy as the savior of the races. Two characters play pivotal roles with Malia’s development from mortal to supernatural.

Jacintha Magsaysay, a dead ringer for her mother, is the precursor of Malia, whose mission is to facilitate the path for Malia to defeat Supremo. The political strategist who Gilbert Imperial hires to run his presidential campaign is a vampire and a Hybrid, secretly working in tandem with Samantha and undermines Supremo while they wait for Malia’s full powers to emerge.[6]

Samantha Imperial, (Maricar Reyes-Poon) is Mateo’s and Lia’s former ally and Magnus'vampire daughter. Sandrino is her half-brother, but she refuses to ally with him. Instead, she provides powerful cover for the LLU and the Moonchasers during their missions against Supremo. Samantha ultimately sacrifices her life to protect Jacintha’s identity.

Tristan is the Moonchasers’ strongest fighter, a mortal thrown in the midst of the war between vampires and werewolves. He discovers his origins, changing the direction of the story, shaping his perspective of the supernaturals. Tristan’s mortal mother, Rica, is a vampire hunter who falls in love and becomes pregnant by the vampire Magnus. When Magnus is killed, Rica takes refuge in the forest with Barang and the teenage Sandrino, but a Luna force led by Tonio Toralba discovers them, captures Rica and kills Sandrino. Barang uses an ancient spell of the Cursed Ink to claim his soul, casts him with the cloak of invincibility, and turns him into a vampire. She raises him towards evil and revenge. Tonio, on the other hand, brings the pregnant Rica to his family and passes off the child as his. Tonio raises Tristan on the path of goodness and righteousness.

Jacintha discovers the source of Supremo’s power is the cursed ink in his arm. Barang’s memories lead her to the enchanted forest where she retrieves the ancient book of spells and learns that the weapon that ends the curse is the First Werewolf’s Fang. Jethro and Gael successfully retrieve the fang for Jacintha.

The seer sees Tristan’s fate with the cursed ink, a curse Barang inadvertently imprints on the infant in Rica’s womb. Everyone understands the significance of this latest information and are conflicted about protecting or killing him. Sandrino, trying to win him over, warns Tristan of man’s deep hatred and distrust for their kind. Jacintha and Malia return to the enchanted forest and glimpse an apocalyptic aftermath of the abomination wrought by an evil Tristan. Malia remains determined to change his fate, and her decision to protect Tristan at all cost creates a split within the LLU.

On the night of the Blood Moon, the LLU and Moonchasers overpower Sandrino’s forces. Amidst the fighting, Jacintha urges Malia to keep Sandrino away from Tristan, but Tristan becomes restlessly impatient to end the conflict. He stubbornly refuses to be kept in the safe house, certain of his strength to withstand the effects of the cursed ink. As Jacintha defeats Supremo, he bites Tristan. She kills Tristan before he turns into a vampire, stabs Supremo with the First Werewolf’s fang and watches him disintegrate to ashes. She vanishes into thin air leaving Malia holding Tristan’s lifeless body. The mystery of Jacintha remains unexplained.

In the underworld, the vampires quietly regroup. Without the cursed ink’s power, Sandrino loses his invincibility, but is alive. Tristan rises from his death as Sandrino chants the spell to awaken the cursed ink inside his brother. Tristan becomes the Commander, the new leader of the vampires. Angry over the tragic circumstances that turned him into a vampire, memories flood his mind of the senseless deaths, his fallen comrades, the family he lost, and mortal victims caught in the crossfire in the power struggle between these supernaturals. As the vampires plan their return, Tristan secretly reveals a different agenda - create a war that annihilates vampires and werewolves, and yield the world for humans alone. Meanwhile, Supremo discovers new information about the cursed ink: the First mark which he lost was for protection; the second mark which is alive inside Tristan gives him unparalleled strength; but whoever possesses both marks gains infinite power. Outside, Malia and her forces believe they are both dead. The new order under the Waya Corp begins. The werewolves are back on top. There is an uneasy peace as the National ID System rolls out under a new President sympathetic towards the Commander. Malia is worried because her council does not take her concerns about a threat of another war seriously, they think her fears are irrelevant.

Portrayed by Kathryn Bernardo (adult) and Erika Clemente (child), she is the Chosen One referred in Jethro's prophecy, the hybrid offspring of Mateo and Lia, a vampire and a werewolf, and a threat to Supremo. The series follows Malia’s path to fulfilling her destiny as protector of the races. After Supremo kills her parents and wipes out most of the LLU, Malia lives in Manila and picks up the pieces of her demolished army. She lives undercover assuming two identities: Miyo Alcantara (male) and Toni Lumakad (female) allowing her to penetrate Sandrino’s organization. Police authorities under Supremo’s hypnotic control assassinate Miyô but she resurrects from the dead with powers stronger than other vampires. She gathers the remnant survivors of the massacre and reorganizes the La Liga Unida.

Malia is proclaimed LLU’s Head Guardian and gains her full powers with the help of Jacintha. Malia learns that Tristan is marked with the cursed ink and destined to be her enemy. She desperately tries to keep Tristan away from Sandrino, but he is killed by Jacintha. In the aftermath of the battle, the LLU begins the new order under the benevolent guardianship of Waya Inc, a billion peso corporation led by Malia. As head of the business conglomerate, she leads a council and a board that believe her fears about their vampire enemies are no longer relevant. But her fears grow when she encounters a vampire protecting humans, who she is convinced is Tristan.
